Desert soils may look harsh and tough, but in reality they are very
fragile and difficult to repair once they are damaged. Many
activities can have devastating effects on the physical, chemical,
and biological properties of desert soil and below ground
ecosystems. The key to improving ecosystem function and speeding
recovery is often ameliorating or repairing adverse changes to the
soil. This requires careful consideration of site history, current
conditions and goals for revised ecosystem structure and function.
